INTRODUCTION:
This master program initiated by Malaysia-Japan International Institute of Technology (MJIIT) of Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in Kuala Lumpur is the first Master’s degree in Disaster Risk Management in Malaysia that is taught by both Japanese and Malaysian DRM experts. It aims to develop highly-skilled human resources who can be leaders in the field of disaster risk management. This program is designed mainly for entry to mid-career professionals for them to expand and upgrade their knowledge and skills in disaster risk management. This is a one-year full time program covering fundamental principle, technical skills and scientific knowledge related to disaster risk management.
COURSE OUTLINE: This course consists of following CORE COURSES:
- Integrated Disaster Management
- Disaster Data Management And Forecasting
- Control Measures And Mitigation Planning
- Emergency Response Planning And Communication
- Recovery And Reconstruction Management
And the following ELECTIVE COURSES:
- Geohazard Information for Disaster Risk Assessment
- River Systems and Management
- Flood Forecasting and Hazard Mapping
- Disaster Education and Preparedness for Social Resilience
- Healthcare in Emergencies and Rehabilitation
*The programme also includes a 2-week attachment in Japan in which students are able to acquire hands-on experience in Disaster Risk Management issues through field work in Japan.
SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE PROGRAMME:
The programme is supported by the Japanese University Consortium (JUC), consisting of members including Tsukuba University, Kyoto University, Kyushu University, Yamaguchi University, Shibaura Institute of Technology, Kanazawa University, National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention (NIED), International Centre for Water Hazard and Risk Management (ICHARM) and Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
There are also opportunities to collaborate with university and research institutions across other ASEAN countries through the ASEAN University Network (AUN) administered under the JICA project, AUN/SEED-Net (http://www.seed-net.org/).
General Entry Requirements
-A bachelor’s degree with good honours in a relevant field from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia or any other recognized institutions of higher learning; or
-Other qualifications equivalent to a Bachelor’s degree and experience in a related field.

International student must be certified by a medical doctor to be in good health for the issuance of a student pass and/or student registration.
Student Visa
International students are required to have a student pass to study in Malaysia. UTM will assist international students in obtaining a visa and student pass. Visa and student pass requirements are subjects to change from time to time and varies between among countries.
